Gigi Hadid spends a lot of time, both on and off the runway, in head-to-toe high fashion looks. But the 23-year-old supermodel says that when’s she’s truly off duty, she prefers to keep things sporty. “Athleisure is very much what comes naturally to me,” Hadid shared at the launch of Reebok x Gigi Hadid, her first full-scale collection for the sportswear brand she’s repped since 2016.
“My style’s very practical,” says Hadid, who explains her personal approach to fashion is rooted in streetwear and sports—she grew up playing volleyball. “I moved to New York, [when] I came to The New School. I was going to class, and after class, I would take the subway to the gym. I didn’t want to change into leggings, so I would wear leggings with a sports bra and a T-shirt.” To this, she’d add a few key accessories, which she says have become a uniform of sorts for her. And it’s this formula that’s informed her Reebok collab.
The 24-piece collection is a ‘90s dream. There are neons, throwback windbreakers made from a nylon plain weave, which Hadid lovingly refers to as “parachute material,” sweatpants that are perfectly high-waisted without looking over-the-top, and platform sneakers that would make the Spice Girls swoon. Aside from its nod to the decade she was born, Hadid says her other major goal was to keep the collection accessible, a growing trend in fashion at the moment. The first drop ranges from $35 to $130.
Whether you’ve actually got plans after exercising or simply want to step up your streetwear game, here are Hadid’s tips for doing so—plus, our picks for pieces that’ll make you feel pulled together post-sweat sesh.
Start with the basics
The foundation of a good post-workout outfit are base layers that are chic and easy—but will totally hold up in a gym or on that run in the park. Not that basics need to be boring. Banner logos, one of spring’s biggest activewear trends, are a great way to add edge to an otherwise classic black legging or sports bra. A onesie (or workout jumpsuit) is another.
Embrace unexpected outerwear
Hadid says she’s a big fan of the “third piece,” or a statement coat, thrown on over a sports bra and leggings. No, you’re not going to go for a run with that faux-fur crop. But the addition of an outerwear piece that doesn’t scream performance will instantly make your outfit feel more intentional.
Add an incognito gym bag
I’m constantly on the hunt for that piece that serves a very practical purpose but doesn’t scream its primary job from the mountaintops. Take, a gym bag, for example. Who said it has to be made out of nylon, crafted like those corporate canvas totes, or large enough to make Mary Poppins smile? Instead, it’s time to set out to find a bag that fits just the right amount of pre-and-post-workout necessities with a more elevated vibe. Go tailored with this style, bringing a little ladylike appeal to your otherwise sporty, cool-girl look. Gigi has been a fan of everything from the top-handle satchel to leather cross-body brights. She does tend toward a slightly larger style, especially when heading to a workout in the winter, so she can carry her sneakers and slip on a pair of anything-but-ordinary snow boots.
Lace up some statement sneakers
When she’s not wearing booties in the winter, Hadid opts for statement sneakers that are bright and attention-grabbing. She paid special mind to this when designing her favorite retro sneaker styles with Reebok, like the Aztrek from 1993 and her elevated take (seriously, they have a platform sole) on the Classic Leathers from 1983.
Wrap the whole look up in a cute scarf
Especially in the winter, a scarf is a great throw-on-and-go accessory that will amp up any look. Something statement-worthy that’s also practical? Sign me up. I love an oversized style that you can wrap up in a thousand ways and counting, whether a cashmere, wool, cotton, or linen weave.
