The world can feel pretty scary sometimes. Between toxic relationships in your life, work problems you’re forced to navigate, and tornadoes of hate brewing on the internet (and, let’s be real, in the real world, too), it’s easy to want to hide behind an invisible wall and close yourself off in the name of self-preservation. But that may be the case simply because you’re not yet aware of another strategy available to you…one that can protect you from bad vibes and help you harness positive energy. Yep, I’m talking about crystals—specifically varieties that offer protective healing properties.
But first, let’s get on the same page about what “protection” means in our lives. According to Sadie Kadlec, crystal expert and intuitive healer at Maha Rose Center for Healing, the notion of protection being a barrier to keep external forces (like other people or just bad energy) from entering our sphere is severely flawed. “The true idea of protection is about finding strength, stability and support within yourself in order to be vulnerable, and trusting of the world around you so there isn’t a need to have that shield,” she says. So basically, don’t expect to use crystals as a literal protective armor that’ll keep all of life’s woes from potentially harming you.

Rather, work to embrace your inner confidence and sense of self, because doing so can help you find protective elements you already intrinsically possess. The crystals, then, can enhance the good vibes. Kadlec says the best ways to use stones for protection is through meditation and carrying them with you (or sleeping with one under your pillow, if you’re Miranda Kerr) as a reminder of your intention, openness, and inner strength. Of course, crystals won’t fix everything, but some, especially the following seven, can help you achieve an altered mind-set and a boosted mood. Here’s what Kadlec has to say about the specific ways each stone can work for you.
Add the following 7 protective crystals to your woo-woo kit.
“[Protection] is about opening the heart and finding strength of self through that process,” Kadlec says. Fluorite creates clarity and openness through the ability to express boundaries in a way others can honor. Place the stone on your heart chakra during meditation to align these energies in order to banish negative thought patterns from your life.
Compassionate communication fosters security and safety in your relationships—two things that are paramount to protection. Kadlec says kyanite is a powerful stone for this, and is also associated with the throat chakra that rules communication. “Kyanite allows our inner truth to surface and be heard,” she says. “It also puts us in a place to receive and hear from other people.” Expressing yourself creates a feeling of safety, so the next time you need to tackle a tough convo that makes you feel nervous and vulnerable, look to this stone.
3. Black tourmaline
Grounding stones like black tourmaline are also protection power players. Kadlec says this one is associated with the solar plexus chakra, where protection often needs a little bolstering. She says black tourmaline can absorb threatening energy and transmute it into something non-threatening. The stone can help you see situations more clearly away from negative influences within yourself or others, and how to respond compassionately.
“Sometimes we feel like we’re being threatened because we’re insecure with ourselves,” Kadlec says. “We react from that place, and that’s when we start to build barriers we think we need in order to build faith.” Black tourmaline can spin these bad vibes on their heads, she says.
4., 5. Pyrite and citrine
While these stones aren’t traditionally associated with protection, pyrite and citrine are adept at helping us find structure. “They’re about the clarity of our intention—who we are and how we can make that happen for ourselves,” Kadlec says.
So instead of bearing the weight of people’s judgments and expectations, take the route of what’s best for you and only you, but without being combative. This ties back to that new-and-improved definition of protection, which is rooted in inner strength, stability, and safety.
Ready for a confidence-boosting pep talk? Great, because it’s actually a common factor in whether we feel protected and safe or not. “Carnelian connects us to our courage,” Kadlec says. “It’s where we do what’s right for ourselves so we don’t silently accept what doesn’t work for us.” Living courageously gives us confidence and drive to make decisions that serve us instead of reeling back in fear or those dreaded “what ifs.”
Stones like malachite can help open our hearts and target fear, eliminating the need to feel protected in the first place. “Crystals that draw in synchronicity and abundance help to put us in the right situations at the right time,” says Kadlec. It’s also a powerful one for expressing gratitude instead of feeling consumed by the race to build a taller wall to create more space between you and your reality. And really, we could all use a little more of that kind of energy in our lives.
