Aquarians (those born between January 19 and February 18) are known to be highly independent, a little bit quirky, and with a tendency to spend a lot of time in their own head. In other words, they can be tough to figure out. But when you add in the other nuances of their zodiac chart, like an Aquarius’ moon sign, it becomes straight-up impossible to put these visionary souls into a box.

A person’s moon sign is the astrological sign that the moon was in when they were born, and it sheds light on the way that person experiences and processes their innermost emotions. This is an important cosmic placement to consider when striving to better understand any person’s chart, but especially so with Aquarians, who often don’t put their feelings on display. “Aquarius is an air sign that rules the intellect,” says astrologer and women’s empowerment coach Natalia Benson. “It’s not often watery and emotive, or even fiery and passionate—it’s more cool, calm, and collected. Aquarians have a little more of a disconnected relationship to their emotions because they seek to intellectually understand them versus really feel them.”

Aquarius with an Aries moon

With Aquarius’ humanitarian streak and Aries’ flare for leadership, this combination possesses strong activism vibes. “This is going to be someone who may seek to be the head of an organization or nonprofit, who is very clear on their ideals and values,” says Benson. “Aquarius rules thought while Aries rules action.” At the same time, she adds, since these are both highly independent signs, this change-making personality would likely need a lot of solo time to work, think, and create.

Aquarius with a Taurus moon

Zodiac signs don’t get much more different than intellectual Aquarius and sensual Taurus. “Aquarius and Taurus don’t exactly speak the same emotional language,” says Benson. “The two signs can either create a really nice balance or be a little bit at odds with each other.” Those with this combination should be mindful to not overanalyze their Taurus moon’s deep-down desire for connection and earthly delights, she adds. Instead they should embrace the inclination, even if it feels a little foreign.

Aquarius with a Gemini moon

Aquarius and Gemini are both heady air signs, so this would likely be someone who mentally analyzes their emotions and has no problem sharing them with those who are close. “The great thing about the Gemini moon is that [it gives people] incredible skills of oration,” says Benson. “Those with this placement can speak what they think and feel with a very clear command of language.” If all that overthinking gets to be too much, Benson says this Aquarius can access grounding energy by doing something physical, like going for a run.

Aquarius with a Cancer moon

Cancer rules a nurturing energy, while Aquarius is all about community. Put them together, and Benson says this is a combination that cares extra-deeply about people and causes. “Aquarius isn’t exactly known to get into their feelings about their relationships, but a Cancer moon is,” she says. “This combination should just be mindful to give to themselves, too. In order to save someone else, they need to get into the lifeboat first.”

Aquarius with a Leo moon

These two signs are opposites on the zodiac wheel, with Leo focused on personal passions and Aquarius geared toward giving back. “This combination may be a little bit challenging if this person feels the opposition between the sun and moon signs,” says Benson. Because of the competing me-versus-us energy, which can surface at different times, this person may be a bit of an enigma to their friends and families. But when their sun and moon traits are in balance, the astrologer says it can result in “a very dynamic, intriguing personality.”

Aquarius with a Virgo moon

Another analytical combination of sun and moon signs, this person may have a tough time letting their emotions flow freely. “A Virgo moon is not exactly one for emotionality, and neither is Aquarius,” says Benson. “The invitation here would be to not hold on to things so much.” And mastering this skill could even benefit this Aquarian’s mental health, Benson adds. “If they’re ever feeling restless or depressed, it could be a sign that they’re due for an emotional release.”

Aquarius with a Libra moon

Benson calls this one of the most harmonious blends of sun and moon. These air signs work well together because they’re all about caring for other people—in one-on-one relationships and in larger social groups. Another positive aspect of this pairing? Aquarius may offset the Libra moon’s people-pleasing tendencies. “A Libra moon tends to really care about others’ approval, but an Aquarius sun can counterbalance that since they’re independent and a bit rebellious,” Benson says.

Aquarius with a Scorpio moon

“A Scorpio moon gives someone an intense emotional disposition, so this would likely be a person who has really strong opinions and ideals, especially about things that are going on in the world,” says Benson. “They’ll have powerful convictions because they want to protect people.” To let the gifts of their sun and moon signs shine, Benson says that this person would do well in a public-facing humanitarian role of some sort—ideally, one that involves standing up for those who don’t have a voice.

Aquarius with a Sagittarius moon

Broadly speaking, there are two types of Aquarians, says Benson: Those who move through life in an offbeat, individualistic way, and those with a more serious, save-the-world kind of M.O. A Sagittarius moon usually places someone on the more jovial end of the spectrum. “This moon placement helps them focus on what’s going right in the world,” says Benson. “This person can see the bright side of challenging situations or relationships.” On the other hand, the Aquarius sun adds depth to the Sag moon’s often surface-level mode of emotional expression.

Aquarius with a Capricorn moon

“Any time we have a Capricorn moon, it tends to lend loyalty to the person’s intimate relationships,” says Benson. “With the Aquarius sun, this may be someone who is very reliable in their friend and community groups. If they give you their word, they’re going to show up and deliver.” The main potential downside to this combination is that this person may have workaholic tendencies. “They can be very focused, so they may need to learn to lighten up a little bit and make time for fun and silliness,” Benson says.

Aquarius with an Aquarius moon

An Aquarius moon amplifies the Aquarius sun sign’s typical traits. “The way this person views their reality and the way they emotionally process are on the exact same playing field,” says Benson. “This is someone who has very a clear purpose for why they’re here. They don’t second guess themselves very often.” If you’re a double Aquarius, just be mindful of keeping any know-it-all tendencies in check. “It’s important that they learn from others in their close personal relationships,” says Benson.

Aquarius with a Pisces moon

While Aquarians can be a bit detached, a Pisces moon brings empathy and spiritual depth to their emotional life. The only hiccup? It can be difficult for this person to decipher where they end and others begin. “Both of these signs can give a lot because they want to help and serve people,” says Benson. “This Aquarius has to have strong emotional boundaries, especially if they’re working in communities where people are asking a lot of them.”
