When hunting for good basics, Topshop might not be your first point of call, as it’s generally known for its cutting-edge, bright-young-thing appeal. It took me a fair few years to realise that below the surface, it offers an impressive groundwork of stylish staples. And once you know what to look out for, it’s really quite easy to spot these hardworking winners.

So what’s the secret to finding Topshop’s expensive-looking staples? I tend to keep an eye out for good fabrics and unusual silhouettes—think a sculptural sleeve or cool neckline. Obviously, you want your basics to fade into the background and act as a canvas for more statement items, but it’s these details that can fool people into thinking you’re decked out in designer.
