Securing the bag – a Telfar bag, to be more exact – is akin to getting Coachella tickets. Everyone wants them; everyone is excited; everyone has to patiently wait their turn. And in many cases, not everyone will get them. At least that’s been my experience trying to secure the large dark olive green shopping bag for the past two-and-a-half years, and more recently, the large yellow shopping bag after seeing
Telfar Clemens, a Black designer, founded the non-gendered TELFAR brand in 2004. The brand produces hats, denim and their famous It bag: The Telfar shopping bag, introduced in 2014, which includes a sleek logo and has been dubbed “the Bushwick Birkin.”
I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Telfar Clemens yet but the designer’s impact on me and the rest of the Black community is monumental. Clemens has given us an IT bag with all the luxury fabric, statement logo, and durability for a fraction of the price. As a champion for Black and LGBTQ communities, Clemens’s approach to inclusivity can maybe best be summed up in the brand’s tag line: “It’s not for you – it’s for everyone.”
I couldn’t be happier for all their success; it’s been a long time coming. At the same time, transitioning from a fan to owner has been incredibly hard. Usually new colors and sizes drop every month and for reasons I don’t understand, I am always the last to know. But I think that’s the amazing thing about the bags. Made of vegan leather and branded with a “T” logo, the bags are an instant status symbol. Owning one of these hard to get bags is a celebration in its own right. Not to mention, the price point is unheard of for IT bags, clocking in under $300 (or more precisely $157 to $257).
Each time I am ready to make a purchase, the bags happen to be sold out. But that all changes for me, and other hopefully shoppers, on Wednesday, August 19th. In response to frustrated wannabe owners (myself included!) Teflar is releasing The Telfar Security Bag Program on Wednesday as a way for everyone who wants the bags to be able to buy them.
“We are not about hype and scarcity. We didn’t set out to make an impossible to get product. The whole point of our bag is accessibility and community,” the brand shared on its website. With more and more people purchasing black-owned products in light of the Black Lives Matter movement, the brand has received an influx of sales and product remains sold out for a large percentage of potential customers. Fans have grown increasingly frustrated. #Telfar was even trending negatively on Twitter as shoppers reacted to not being quick enough during a drop.
And so, they created the program. For 24 hours only, shoppers will be able to pre-order an unlimited amount of bags in any color and any size they choose. The shopping bags are guaranteed to deliver between December 15th and January 15th, and are non-refundable, with no cancellations. The brand asks that you double check your order multiple times before submitting as there will be no room for changes. You will receive an email the minute your order ships.
Personally, I’m thrilled this program exists! It brings me one step closer to finally owning a Telfar bag. If you too are completely and utterly obsessed with Telfar, scroll through to check out all the bags we have our eye on. See you online Wednesday!
