The One Coat Trend Fashion Editors and Stylists Always Return to Every Autumn

September 09, 2020 at 06:21AM

Aside from classics such as trenches and pea coats, it’s not often you come across a coat trend that has survived multiple seasons. Teddy coats saw a huge spike in popularity last winter, rising in online searches by 1000% YoY (you couldn’t walk down the street without passing at least three people clad in its fluffy embrace). But surprise, surprise—the fashion world’s favourite cuddly toy trend is back for another season and is well and truly on its way to becoming a style staple.

All kinds of faux-fur creations are on trend for A/W 19, but this still stands out as one of the most enduring ways to wear what can be quite an outrageous look, and we’ve already noticed that the super-organised shoppers out there are looking for them online.

Teddy bear coats made boho on the Celine A/W 19 runway. The joy of the teddy coat is that it can be pulled off by anyone—from likes of Carine Roitfeld (aka fashion royalty) to up-and-coming influencer talent such as Syana Laniyan. There’s no set way to style it, but if the street style crowd are anything to go by, straight-leg jeans and simple jumpers are the way forward. In our opinion, considering the sheer size of the teddy coat, it’s best to stick to streamlines silhouettes below. Think slim-fit trousers, skinny jeans and slip skirts. There are plenty of options available if you’re on the hunt for a teddy coat—it’s just as easy to spend as little as £50 as it is to splurge £5000 on one. However, one thing’s for sure: This coat will be a dream on cold mornings when all you’re craving is a duvet day. We guarantee you won’t take it off all winter.

Carine Roitfeld started the trend way back in 2013 by wearing this statement Max Mara piece.

Syana makes her coat work with raw-hem jeans and slingback shoes.

Who says you have to play it safe? A neutral teddy bear coat can work with almost any outfit.

Eva Chen braves the chilly streets of New York City in a fluffy statement coat.

Belted robe styles started to gain popularity last winter.

They can look incredibly elegant with a dress and heels, as proven by Shanina Shaik here.
