Only a few weeks into 2021, and it feels like we’re all just living in Olivia Rodrigo’s world. The 17-year-old High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actress kicked off the year with a breakup song titled “Drivers License” that’s dominating the charts and a moody music video to match. I’ve kept the track on repeat (and since it’s breaking records left and right, I’m sure I’m not alone), and I’m now deep into the Olivia fan club. So much so that I’m not only admiring her voice – I’m admiring her fashion, too.

I chatted with Olivia’s stylist, Laura Sophie Cox, who dresses other stars you know and love like Emma Watson and Bianca Lawson. Laura told me that, like Emma, Olivia has her eye focused on eco-friendly fashion. “She’s only 17, but she has this huge passion for sustainability. It’s really exciting and refreshing to see,” Laura said. “We share the same love of Depop, thrift stores, vintage, and she has a great sense of style.”

For Olivia’s press tours and magazine shoots, Laura strives to pick high-fashion looks from eco-friendly designers like Stella McCartney, Maggie Marilyn, and Lizzie McQuade. “What better way to celebrate these designers than by having strong and powerful women, like Olivia, wear their clothes?” Laura asked.

Young people, like Olivia, especially value sustainability as they see the ongoing impact climate change has on their lives. Laura is aware that not everyone has access to designers like Stella McCartney at their fingertips – especially not teenagers in Olivia’s age group. For Gen Z, Laura recommends using an app called Good on You to get a breakdown of your favorite brand’s eco-footprint up close.

“Good on You does all the work for you. It can be a complete minefield, but [the app] is the world’s leading source of fashion-brand ratings. They do all the hard work for you,” she explained. According to Laura, the app uses expert analysis to give brands a score “in terms of animal, neighbor, and environment” impact. “Having apps like that on your phone help to cut out the middle man and do all the work.”

When Laura isn’t styling Olivia (like for the recent “Drivers License” music video), she’s admiring the singer’s style from afar. Despite being born in the early ’00s, a quick scroll through Olivia’s Instagram shows she’s heavily influenced by ’90s fashion. She gravitates toward trendy Gen Z styles, namely smocked tops, oversize T-shirts, suit sets, overalls, chunky Dr. Marten boots, and Converse sneakers. “She likes her flats. Like me, avoids heels,” Laura joked.

Laura gets a front seat to Olivia’s many incredible accomplishments, and her pride extends far beyond what the singer decides to wear. “She works so hard and deserves all the success,” Laura said, referencing the recent “Drivers License” craze. “She’s a superstar. She’s achieved so much, and she’s only 17. And on top of that, she’s the kindest soul.” Laura continued, “She thinks with environmental and social responsibility. It’s a pure joy working with her, and she deserves all of it.”
