I’d Previously Sworn Off Miniskirts, But These Styles Have Changed My Mind

Our wardrobe preferences have changed dramatically over the last year; slippers have replaced high heels and, as far as our outfits go, anything other than leggings or joggers has been rendered virtually obsolete. But now, things are changing. We might only be a few weeks into 2021, but we can already feel our sartorial appetites returning, with a real need to wear something other that makes us feel empowered, and dare we say, sexy. Cue miniskirts.

Over the last few seasons, midi hemlines have been the main focus, as miniskirts waited for their time in the spotlight to return. And that time is now. People often associate miniskirts with the belly-baring, low-rise ’90s staple worn by Britney Spears types. But the divisive piece has come a long way, as was easily one of the chicest and most prevalent items on the spring/summer 2021 runway and presentation circuit. Even I, who had previously sworn off miniskirts, have come to see how polished they can be.

“Over the past few years, it has been all about the midi dress. However, there has been an increasing focus on the female form, with a return to bodycon, cut-outs and rising hemlines,” explains Who What Wear’s UK editor Emma Spedding in our biannual trend report. “Designers such as Jacquemus, Miu Miu, and Louis Vuitton all had several miniskirts in their collections, with ’60s-style micro-skirts and mini slip dresses.”

Influencers have also started to welcome the miniskirt back into their closets, wearing them with everything from shackets and knee-high boots to loafers and slogan tees. As for the skirts, while cult variations are doing the rounds (think Marcia’s cutout sides and Paco Rabanne’s chainmail number), but if you’re looking for something tamer to ease you back in, you might consider a pleated tennis mini or a classic tweed iteration.
