Simple Autumn Outfits That Will Make Getting Dressed Easy

August 13, 2021 at 09:35AM

After months of wearing vibrant summer dresses and adventurous prints—like tie-dye and neons—many of us use autumn as a time for a wardrobe reset and to revisit the classics. At this time of year, we typically return to back-to-school tailoring, checked prints, and a more muted colour palette. Often in autumn, the simplest outfits are the most reliable—especially considering the weather can seem to dramatically change within hours. We have identified nine basic outfits using a classic capsule, including a trench coat, ankle boots, cashmere jumper, and heritage blazer that you can always rely on come the autumn/winter season.

All the items you’ll find in the outfits below can easily be mixed and matched, so you’ll also be able to create many different versions of these autumn classics. Basic doesn’t have to be boring either, as you can mix colour in with the typical autumn-leaf colour wheel that has dominated this season. A brightly hued slip skirt can belong in an autumn capsule just as much as a houndstooth blazer and camel ankle boots.

Style Notes: As far as Brit autumn wardrobes go, a trench coat is quintessential. Of course, there are plenty pf plain options to choose from, which will go with every outfit, but we also love looking for trenches with different design details—checked panels being one of them.

Style Notes: Cowboy boots are set to be the boot of autumn/winter 2021, so it’s going to pay to invest in a stand-out pair early, as they’ll inevitably go.

Style Notes: Can you ever go wrong with jeans and a blazer? The answer is no. Look to Sylvie and consider coloured tailoring when you’re on your quest for the perfect blazer—this blue shade is perfection.

Style Notes: Summer is about white shirting, so one of the easiest ways to make your basic outfits look more autumnal is by swapping in a black style instead. Tucked into jeans and paired with beautiful lace-up boots, this look will easily be one of your most-worn.

Style Notes: Another autumnal look, another blazer. However, Franny’s ‘fit just goes to show how versatile blazers are to style. Use yours to give slip skirts a cold-weather spin, and finish with an on-trend tote.

Style Notes: Long-sleeves provide the ideal transitional top to carry you through from summer to autumn, on which tie-dye prints keep cropping up. Wear with chunky trainers for Y2K appeal.

Style Notes: Not a jeans person? Rest assured dresses still work in autumn, too. One of our favourite ways to wear our printed midis past August is with a pair of hiking boots.

Style Notes: Leather blazer, check. White top, check. Black jeans, check. This is the ultimate minimalists’ autumn look.

Style Notes: Suede outerwear always makes a comeback for autumn. However, after being more predominant on the runway than previous seasons, all the best pieces are already selling out—this Mint Velvet jacket being one of them.
