The 8 Mini Trends I’ll Be Championing This Winter

What is a microtrend? Some might argue that it’s a more fad-driven version of seasonal trends brought on by the fast-moving nature of social media. And while this can certainly be the case in some contexts, I would argue that there’s another way to interpret the concept. Against the headlining trends of the season, a microtrend can encapsulate those aesthetic quirks and unexpected details that arise from fashion lovers deviating away from the well-trodden path. They are the pieces that bring life to simple outfits and the silhouettes that offer an innovative spin on classic styles

I also think that a microtrend is a very personal thing: A particular detail that stands out to you. For this reason, I don’t like to be too prescriptive, but I thought you might be interested to see which fashion details have caught my eye over the last few weeks: Think unexpected colours that I have previously sidelined, the subtle placement of a waistband, and the frivolity of a feather trim.

Top tip: If you’re wanting to experiment with a new look without committing straight away I would recommend trying fashion rental. Alternatively, I find that vintage is the perfect (and sustainable) way to find those one-of-a-kind sartorial gems that bring microtrend personality to your cold-weather capsule. I’ve included some examples below. Ready? Scroll down to see and shop the microtrends that are bringing life to my winter wardrobe this year.

Style Notes: Bring a little Gossip Girl appeal to your winter wardrobe with a knotted preppy knit. Layer up with tailored separates for extra styling points.

Style Notes: The mini is back for winter 2021, and we’ve seen so many checked iterations floating around on Instagram. Just add a roll-neck and knee-high boots.

Style Notes: Winter dressing needn’t be all about beige. Why not inject some joy into the colder months with a colour-pop knit? Go head-to-toe à la Grece Ghanem or just add to your fave jeans.

Style Notes: A fringed trim can do wonders for a classic beige camel coat, and Whistles’ wrap number is right at the top of our wish list.

Style Notes: If the psychedelic swirl was a little too hippie for your liking, you might enjoy the subtler ombré stripes that are proliferating this season. Check out the likes of Mango and Samsøe Samsøe for fun interpretations.

Style Notes: There’s nothing that encompasses the homespun trend quite like patchwork quilting. Sea NY has really invested in the trend, but we also recommend checking out sites such as Etsy for secondhand iterations.

Style Notes: Whether you’re looking for a fun party look or simply a way to liven up your cold-weather capsule, the feather-finishes trend is definitely worth a look. The Sleeper’s feather-trim PJ set is never not on my personal wish list.

Style Notes: Spotted everywhere on the autumn/winter 2021 runways, slouchy tailored trousers might not seem like an obvious trend, but there’s something about the lower waistline and super-wide legs that feel very current.
