There’s a lot of good things about spring. Admiring the daffodils on a lunchtime walk; longer, lighter evenings; sitting in a pub garden with friends without freezing to death… I could go on. But one of my favourite things about this season (spoken like a true fashion person), is trench coats.
For me, being able to just throw a trench over a T-shirt and jeans is the ultimate sign spring has arrived, and this week was the first time I’ve done that this year. Which means it’s finally here (well, technically the first day of spring is on Sunday but according to the weather report mother nature was just as impatient as us).
As someone who lives in London and has classic wardrobe taste, I lean on my trench coat from the first sign of spring to the last days of summer— it’s one of the hardest working pieces in my capsule. And that’s mainly because I find it to be the most efficient and effective way to make any spring outfit look expensive. Invest in the perfect trench and feeling good about your outfit at this time of year becomes a whole lot easier, trust me. The best part is, they go with everything. I layer mine over neutrals— usually relaxed tailoring for the office and classic blue jeans at the weekend— but if you’re a maximalist, a trench also provides the perfect anchor to pull all your bright and printed outfits together.
If you haven’t already found The One, or you’re looking to update your existing trench after years of wear and tear— you’re in luck this season. Because I’m here to tell you you don’t have to spend thousands on a designer style to get the most polished look. Good old COS, one of our favourite high street destinations for expensive-looking classics, has just released the *perfect* style as part of its spring heroes collection. Their Belted Trench Coat is as classic as it gets, made in that beautifully stiff cotton (the key to making your trench look elevated), with timeless features like a storm flap, epaulletes and waist belt.
Unsurprisingly, it’s already been picked up by lots of influencers and gone straight to the top of all our editors’ spring wish lists. So I thought I’d share it with you now, before it inevitably sells out later in the season. You’ll find a link to it below, as well as some more beautiful trenches I’ve already been admiring this season…
