Yara Shahidi’s Cutout Bikini Is Made From Recycled Fishing Nets

As summer rolls around, Yara Shahidi is showing it’s possible to look good in sustainably made clothes. The “Black-ish” actress posed in a retro-looking floral two-piece in a photo posted on her Instagram, exuding flower-power energy in a kaleidoscope of green, yellow, and red hues. Given her dewy summer glow, she appropriately captioned the photo “Glazed donut summers.”

The suit is the design of Galamaar, an LA-based swimwear brand committed to developing its products with eco-friendly fabrics. The brand’s website claims it makes longer-lasting products that can be worn season after season. “With thoughtful consideration for quality in materials and construction, our intent is to create elevated wardrobe staples, steadfast through changing trends and wear,” its statement reads. When it comes to sustainable clothes, the better the construction, the longer they last – saving them from landfills.

Shahidi’s suit, for example, is made out of nylon from discarded fishing nets, and everything from the metal hardware to the packaging materials is created with sustainability in mind. But Shahidi is not the only celebrity encouraging sustainability. Others include Emma Watson, who wore a sustainable two-piece outfit to interview Al Gore, and Willow Smith, who helped launch a gender-free, sustainable line for PacSun.

Of course, one of the biggest obstacles to making the switch toward a more sustainable wardrobe is the price tag that comes with it, but if you view these pieces as true investments (for yourself and the environment), they may be worth the splurge. You can get Shahidi’s exact look ahead.
