If I could dress like Ashley Olsen every day of my life, trust me, I would. But right now, I’m trying to figure out how I want to dress for fall. So my goal? Pinpoint a moment in time when Ashley Olsen was dressing really, really appropriately for our current climate. Even though the fashion world will be approaching the new season virtually, September just feels like the right time to make a shift – leaving my sweat shorts and ribbed tanks for summer days past, mostly spent on the couch. It’s been six months and we are still working from home, preparing for Zoom calls from the waist up with a pair of drop earrings and a lightweight blouse, but I’m ready to keep style with me from head to toe – it’s always been part of who I am, and I like to think the bottom half of my outfit deserves fair treatment.
I like what Ashley brings to the table here, at a Vanity Fair party during the Tribeca Film Festival in 2004: champagne slacks that skim the floor but still bare a hint of her olive-toned power pumps. Ashley’s whole color palette is spot on for the season – neutrals warmed up with the addition of a soft, cognac leather clutch and a golden smoky eye that accents her jewelry. Right now, I’m in the mood to work these shades back into my life, even if they feel overtly fall. A polka-dot blouse and silk pants are no revolutionary combination, but they make for the type of sophistication I’m looking for; a comfortable sophistication that still feels right for the house, but also feels renewed, optimistic, and light. So thank you Ashley Olsen, for the tip off. It took me 16 years to appreciate it, but I’m glad this outfit idea walked back into my life.
