Missouri elected its first Black congresswoman, Democrat Cori Bush, who’s bringing attention to a very real fact Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has spoken about before – clothes don’t come for free. Bush acknowledged that it can be tough to shop for business clothes given the high price point and pink tax women must navigate. Bush is dressing for an important role she’s about to take on, so it makes sense she asked her followers for advice.
“The reality of being a regular person going to Congress is that it’s really expensive to get the business clothes I need for the Hill. So I’m going thrift shopping tomorrow. Should I do a fashion show?” she wrote on Twitter. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who recently addressed her own fashion choices when she was called out for wearing luxury fashion brands for her Vanity Fair cover (which, FYI, she had to give back), stepped right up to help: “Thrifting, renting, and patience as you get your closet together sis. Capsule wardrobe will be your best friend. @AyannaPressley has the accessory game down. Good news is that all these practices are very sustainable and good for the planet!”
Bush went on to share videos of the pieces she picked up on her thrifting journey with some uplifting videos set to our favorite mood music – Beyoncรฉ’s “We Run The World (Girls)” and Cardi B’s “I Like It.” She even paired a cranberry jacquard blazer with the cozy bedazzled boots it appears she treasures. She wore them to campaign in St. Louis, and then to vote on Election Day. Fashion is all about maintaining personality, right?
Bush is about to have some solid fashion friends and supporters in her realm. AOC promised a shopping date. Rent the Runway committed to helping out with pre-loved designer garments, and Jason Wu and Christian Siriano dropped a line, because they’re willing to create outfits for her too! Scroll down to see the full story play out on Twitter, check out Bush’s new outfits, and wait patiently for her proud style on the Hill, because everyone knows it’s important to feel confident on the job.
