Emma Stone plays villain Cruella de Vil in Disney’s Cruella, which premieres on May 28. Who’s responsible for the tough edge and punk-rock glamour she displays throughout the film? That would be English costume designer Jenny Beavan, who is well known for her work styling Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth in The King’s Speech (2010), and Rachel McAdams in Sherlock Holmes (2009). Jenny has also recently worked on Disney films The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018) and Christopher Robin (2018), proving she already has a knack for dreaming up fantastical looks that really speak to the essence of a character.

In the newly released 90-second trailer alone, we see Emma wear a floor-length jacquard silk cape that she sets ablaze, transforming it into a body-hugging red mermaid gown. It is natural that her outfits would have our heads spinning, as the young Estella de Vil, who grew up in London in the 1970s, is an aspiring fashion designer. We even get a glimpse of her mannequins, all lined up in a row, as she warns us, “I was born brilliant.” It’s plain to see Disney onboarded a costume designer for the project who is just as brilliant as Estella and Baroness von Hellman (played by Emma Thompson), who will surely be dressed in looks that are up to par.
