Silky, stretchy, clingy and oh so chic—there’s a new breed of dress that is taking over this spring, and one that we predict will be everywhere in three months’ time. Acting as a counterpoint to the roomy throw-on frocks that have proliferated over the last few years, the second-skin dress was spotted in a variety of guises at the likes of Rejina Pyo, Jil Sander, Victoria Beckham and Loewe. Some manifested in dramatic, flowing jersey, while others opted for sultrier cut-out details, but every single one could not feel further from the tent dresses that carried us through the lockdown. This is, perhaps, no coincidence.
This won’t be a trend that necessarily appeals to everyone. However, you might be surprised to see how eclectic the silhouettes on offer are. Of course, you have the classic form-fitting midis in shades of black and brown from brands such as Mango, but I personally love the interpretations offered up by Jil Sander and Markoo, which are more fitted on the top and hang looser on the bottom—perfect for those who don’t want so much clinginess on their hips.
I also love how brands have used this trend to bring an elevated spin to more traditionally casual fabrics, such as jersey. Just look at Victoria Beckham and Bottega’s second-skin maxis, which come with dramatic open backs and ankle-skimming lengths. Just add heels and chunky jewellery for an unexpected yet supremely stylish party look. H&M’s cut-out maxi is another must-see formal iteration, which is begging to be taken to a red carpet event.
If you want to explore the trend a little further, we’ve put together an edit of our favourite second-skin dresses that are available to buy now. Scroll down to see our shortlist.
I love the shade of blue from Jil Sander’s Resort collection.
