Giambattista Valli presented his digital showcase Fall 2020 Couture video as part of Paris Haute Couture Week, which stars supermodel Joan Smalls. Joan models Valli’s new creations, which are made from an abundance of tulle and maintain a focus on volume, which is a signature characteristic of the fashion house.
The oversize bows, ballooning trains, and floor-sweeping tiered skirts speak to just that – and they all come in colors that are meaningful to the designer, who chose to present the film of Joan alongside images of Paris in the winter. “Colors include red like the lipstick marks often found on empty cups on the tables of Parisian cafรฉs, black like the notorious ‘Petite Robe Noire’, pink like the wild roses growing in the city’s gardens and ivories like the moulures that adorn windows and ceilings,” the brand said, explaining the connection in a caption beneath the film.
Joan transitions from minidress to gown effortlessly, showing off the intricate details of each and every one of the 18 looks, some of which can certainly be considered elaborate bridal gowns.
It has been interesting to see how designers are choosing to reveal their Couture lines in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Valli’s 12-minute fashion film has been my personal favorite so far. It allows the viewer to get lost in blissful, beautiful dresses that are obviously fantasy to most of us, but also seemingly – at least, in a subtle way – connected to the current world around us. After all, many of the dresses here are accessorized with tulle face masks that could be a call to action, even though these masks are obviously not meant for functional use.
Scroll through to watch the video in full, then check out some of my favorite stills of the talented Smalls, who couldn’t have done these powerful gowns better justice.
