The ‘Snowpiercer’ and ‘Umbrella Academy’ actors have recently been more public about their romance.
When Hamilton debuted on Broadway in August 2015, it became a pop cultural phenomenon, winning Tonys, Grammys, and a Pulitzer Prize. What fans may not realize is that the hit hip-hop musical also led to two real-life romances among its original cast. One of those couples is Daveed Diggs, who originated the roles of Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette, and Emmy Raver-Lampman, who was an ensemble member of the cast and understudied all three lead female roles. Now, she’s returning to the small screen in season 2 of Umbrella Academy, which hits Netflix today.
Ahead, everything we know about their love story.
Both Diggs and Raver-Lampman were a part of Hamilton‘s first Broadway cast. Diggs won a Tony Award for his dual roles of Jefferson and Lafayette during his run. Raver-Lampman, a member of the ensemble, left the show in April 2016 to join the Chicago cast of SpongeBob SquarePants the musical. Her departure occurred two months before the Disney+ version of Hamilton was filmed, meaning you won’t find her in the final movie.
In an October 2017 interview with Theater Mania, Raver-Lampman spoke about her time with the hit musical. “It was very much in the vein of any new show that you’re opening or getting ready to open; it’s just absolute chaos, not from the standpoint of the audience, but it’s still so new to everyone, and everyone is trying to get their bearings on what they’re actually supposed to be doing onstage,” she recalled.
Diggs left Hamilton in July 2016. He went on to release new music with his rap group Clipping and co-star in the ABC sitcom black-ish.
It’s unclear when Diggs’ and Raver-Lampman’s relationship began, but it was after they both exited the show. As of May 2016, Diggs was still dating his longtime girlfriend, actress Jalene Goodwin, according to a profile of him in The New York Times.
The pair remained close after their working relationship ended. Diggs posted a photo of his feet alongside Raver-Lampman, whom he tagged in the Instagram photo. The actor was in Chicago to watch the city’s production of Hamilton, where Raver-Lampman played a role in the ensemble cast.
Three months later, he saw Raver-Lampman on the Hamilton national tour, calling her performance as Angelica Schuyler “a revelation” on Instagram.
A few months later, Raver-Lampman posted a selfie of herself, Diggs, and his Blindspotting co-star Rafael Casal. She captioned the snap, “THE. HOMIES.”
During an interview for Women’s Health, Diggs spoke about what he looks for in a romantic partner. “I like individuality. I’m attracted to women who have been against so much that is thrown at them in this world and arrived at a place where they’re comfortable with themselves and confident,” he said, adding, “I pair well with people who like to hold court and be front and center.” That same month, Raver-Lampman supported the upcoming release of Diggs’ new movie Blindspotting, writing on Instagram, “#myfriendsaresotalented.”
Diggs made a few more appearances on Raver-Lampman’s Instagram feed the following summer. The pair brunched in New York and traveled to a Golden State Warriors game with Casal.
By the fall, Raver-Lampman had landed her role as Allison Hargreeves on the Netflix superhero series The Umbrella Academy. Diggs congratulated his former co-star on the gig via Instagram.
The following month, Diggs posted a photo from his family’s Thanksgiving weekend, which included Raver-Lampman. She shared the same photo with the caption, “FRIENDSGIVING.”
At the beginning of last year, Diggs and Raver-Lampman made their possible relationship red carpet official. She attended the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards with Diggs, alongside his Blindspotting co-star Janina Gavankar.
He also shouted out Raver-Lampman ahead of the premiere of her show, Umbrella Academy. He captioned footage of the actress in action, “Superhero. @umbrellaacad hits your @netflix feed Feb. 15th and I can’t wait for y’all to see how brilliant @emmyraver is in this show. #Number3 #TheRumor #AllisonHargreeves.”
Diggs and Raver-Lampman posed with Lin-Manuel Miranda on Instagram the following month.
When The Umbrella Academy was renewed for season 2, Diggs congratulated Raver-Lampman on the ‘gram, writing, “Guess who’s making a season 2!!!! So proud of @emmyraver and congratulations to the entire @umbrellaacad squad! I can’t wait!”
For the next year, the co-stars-turned-couple stayed quiet about their relationship.
Diggs alluded to living with Raver-Lampman during a Los Angeles Times interview in June 2020. When speaking about the differences between himself and his Snowpiercer character Andre Layton he said, “Layton is hyper-observant. I am not. I have not ever figured out where all the things in our kitchen are because my girlfriend put them where they are, and I still don’t know. I would not make a good detective.” He added, “We’ve been in this house two years,” hinting at a possible summer 2018 start of their relationship.
For as long as these two have known each other, their relationship was not openly reported on until July 2020. JustJared shared news of their relationship following the couple’s attendance at the Los Angeles premiere of Raver-Lampman’s movie aTypical Wednesday. Both of the actors wore matching masks to the event.
It was one of the first red carpet premieres to take place during the pandemic. Variety reported that the 200-person venue held only 60 guests, with temperature checks and face masks required inside.
