All I Want to Wear in 2022 Are Trousers and Love These 7 Styling Ideas

April 02, 2022 at 08:00AM

I have to confess. I had planned to write this story about new styling ideas for 2022 from the spring/summer collections. After completing my research for the piece, I looked through my saved images and noticed that seven out of eight of the styling ideas that had stood out to me all involved a pair of trousers. So here we are. This is now a story about how to wear trousers in 2022 because they’re clearly all I am paying attention to right now.

Our most-read stories of the month are pretty much all about wide-leg trousers, so I’m not alone in my trouser obsession. It seems like we’re all ready to get out of the leggings and comfortable trousers and return to more tailored styles. Designers such as Peter Do, Proenza Schouler and Victoria Beckham showed us how to incorporate tailored trousers into our wardrobes with ease. The key is to opt for a pair that will act as a staple within your wardrobe but will also feel ultra-luxe thanks to small details and the silhouette.

Since September, Lyst has seen a 55% increase in searches for wide-leg trouser suits along with a growing interest in shirts, loafers and co-ords, reflecting a move towards a more low-key luxury aesthetic. “Versatility and ease are more important than ever, and this can be achieved with basics with a twist, modern classics and muted tones, all of which are the vital pieces every wardrobe needs to help elevate the simplest of looks,” says Net-a-Porter’s Libby Page. “We’re seeing our customers invest more in quality basics and timeless pieces that can be worn for seasons and even years to come, so when those pieces have an additional quirky element, they’re sold!”

When it comes to trouser trends for 2022, there is a real move towards boxier suit trousers. Designers such as Victoria Beckham and Peter Do really perfected wide-leg, high-waisted styles, either in black, white or cream. Keep scrolling for the seven trouser styling ideas that I can’t wait to wear this spring.

I just adore everything about this outfit—the flowing open shirt, the bag slung across the body and the high-waisted ivory trousers. Peter Do, you have created a masterpiece.

Boob tubes are returning as part of the Y2K revival, and Celine created a cool new spin on this ‘00s look, pairing a black strapless top with slouchy straight-leg jeans and heels. This is exactly what I want to be wearing for weekend drinks as soon as I can ditch my coat.

Chloé’s S/S 22 collection was also truly divine, and I love how these white wide-leg trousers were styled with a crafty colourful top. The neutrals make your eyes really focus on the beautiful print.

Seriously, how cool is this? When I grow up, I want to wear head-to-toe Proenza Schouler, or I would happily wear this suit-and-trench combo every single day. The tailoring of this suit is immaculate. However, the sandals and boxy silhouette of the trench give it a relaxed feel.

Victoria Beckham is the queen of tailored trousers, and for her S/S 22 collection, she paired a slouchy high-waisted black pair with a blue Oxford shirt, which was unbuttoned all the way down. Who knew officewear could look so sexy.

I don’t know if it’s the sand in the background or the beautiful peach colour, but this picture makes me want to go straight to Skyscanner and book myself a holiday ASAP.

This is so simple, but the proportions just make it magnificent. The longline cardigan is buttoned just above the waistline of the trousers to reveal a small triangle of flesh, which feels really modern and creates a striking shape. If I could copy just one outfit, it would be this.
