While I love to savour every last minute of summer, it has come time to accept that autumn is here. And although I am not particularly enthused about the idea of cooler weather, I have to admit I am quite excited by the prospect of trying all of the season’s new trends. 

When it comes to dresses, there are a few themes we are already starting to see come through for autumn, whether it be thanks to the A/W 20 runways or the outfits we’ve spotted on social media. Statement collars and colourful checks are among two of the most popular looks we are already seeing, with brands including Ganni, Baum und Pferdgarten and Stine Goya partaking in the trends. Slim-fitting knitted dresses are also quite prominent this season, which can be traced back to Jacquemus’s form-fitting collection, while printed mesh dresses have been popular on the high street, presumably taking inspiration from French label Marine Serre. 

Interestingly enough, several of the season’s most popular trends are also being used in conjunction with each other. For example, & Other Stories is currently stocking a Peter Pan–collar dress in a check fabric, while Baum und Pferdgarten recently launched a check dress in a mesh fabric. From the runway of Gucci to the collection of Ganni, statement collars are a prominent feature appearing across dresses and ready-to-wear in general this season. Peter Pan collars with frill trims, in particular, seem to be everywhere right now, creating this season’s answer to the prairie-dress trend.

You can thank Jacquemus for this look. Regarded as the new take on body-con, form-fitting knit dresses in quality fabrics will be prominent this autumn and have already gained the attention of influencers globally.

While checks are often a winner for autumn, this season, we’re seeing them created in bright shades and vibrant combinations. Contemporary labels including Baum und Pferdgarten (pictured above) and Ganni have embraced the style.  

Printed mesh seems to be having quite the moment for A/W 20. French designer Marine Serre has included the trend in its collections for several seasons, though this autumn, we seem to be seeing high-street labels and contemporary brands championing the look. From tie-dye to florals and abstract patterns, just about any print goes.
