Is it just me, or is Instagram awash with basic tops this spring? Influencers who were historically known for their extroverted ensembles have been stripping it back in favour of previously overlooked wardrobe workhorses, such as racer tanks and ribbed roll-necks. If you’re anything like me, this is great news as you’ll be craving sartorial simplicity and looking for versatility when you get dressed in the morning.

Less is definitely more right now, but that doesn’t mean staples can’t rival those look-at-me ensembles. Case in point: Brittany Bathgate is a diehard minimalist who builds her outfits around basics. For example, she’ll pair a Breton top with white jeans and a trench coat, and the effect is undeniably chic. Personally, I have rediscovered a love for tank tops, a clean-lined buy that can pack a punch when tucked into drawstring trousers and accessorised with a chain necklace.
