On Alexa Chung: Leather Trench Coat (£950)

To compile our autumn/winter 2020 trend report, I looked back at hundreds of catwalk images, and it quickly became clear that there is one coat trend that featured in almost every major collection and so is destined to dominate new-in sections this autumn. The likes of Bottega Veneta and Stella McCartney created beautiful trenches and tailored coats in buttery leathers (some real, and some vegan) in caramel, chocolate brown, teal and terra-cotta shades, as well as a more classic black leather. Leather coats have moved away from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comparisons, as thanks to beautiful tailoring and rich colour palettes, these are some of the most elegant coats I’ve ever seen.

Pictured above: Bottega Veneta. Leather coats are certainly an investment buy, as they tend to cost in the thousands, making them “lifetime buys,” rather than something to wear for a year or two. Fashion buyers have heavily invested into leather outerwear this season, as Tiffany Hsu, fashion buying director, explains, “Following the wave of minimalist leather-on-leather tailoring inspired by menswear, new leather looks appeared in the collections this season. Tan and beige are, of course, still key. However, designers also incorporated new colours to create statement pieces. We also adored the nut-brown, floor-length trench coat from Bottega Veneta.”

If you want to lean towards a more classic choice, we love the tan leather coats from Prada and Loewe, while Bottega Veneta has reimagined leather coats by playing with colour and texture. Leather coats are still a significant investment if shopping on the high street, but we love the chic belted leather coat by Arket. We also recommend shopping for leather coats second hand too, and have found some amazing options on Etsy and Vestiaire Collective below. Keep shopping to see our edit of leather coats.
