If there was a prize for 2020 ‘s most redundant item of clothing, it would surely be the stiletto. With parties cancelled and weddings postponed, the high heel has been relegated to the dusty depths of our wardrobes, along with the likes of bikinis and workwear. Yep, it’s been a rough year for the partywear staple. However, there is a silver lining to the stiletto’s near extinction, and it’s the prolific rise and rise of flat shoes.
From Birkenstocks and brogues to shearling slippers and combat boots, never before has there been such a demand for flats, and never before has the selection been so eclectic. With social restrictions remaining in place for the time being, 2021 is set to be no different. With their classic charm and minimalist versatility, loafers are the latest in a line-up of flat-shoe styles that have adorned the feet of fashion’s finest over the last 12 months. Thanks to the continued reign of the Gucci Horsebit Loafer, and the more recent iterations from Prada and Chanel, the loafer is looking like an undeniably appealing addition to our spring capsules.
While the selection from designer brands is plentiful (see Gucci, JW Anderson and ATP Atelier), there are also stylish options to be found on the high street. In true Scandi style, Arket has opted for a more streamlined, fuss-free silhouette, which is bound to look good with denim. For a more statement-making finish, check out the chunky styles from & Other Stories and Monki—just pair with 2021’s miniskirt. Personally, I love wearing my G.H. Bass monochrome loafers with tailored trousers and slouchy knits for a comfy yet polished WFH look. For a more unusual spin, try a pair of loafers in bright gold a la Linda Tol.
